DON'T JUST EAT TO GET BY, EAT TO LEVEL UP
PUBLISHED: APRIL 3, 2019
Food is more than just something to satisfy hunger — it’s fuel for how you move, feel, think, and perform. If you’re serious about getting fit, building muscle, and staying lean, you’ve got to stop eating just to feel full and start eating to fuel your body.
Too many of us were raised on survival food — processed, cheap, salty, fried, or sugary. It may have filled the belly, but it didn’t feed the body.
Sadly even as today as adults, many of our everyday meals are loaded with processed ingredients, added sugars, heavy salt, and fried oils—and it’s silently killing us.
For Black men, the risks are even higher. Diets high in junk food have been directly linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and even certain cancers—conditions that already hit our community harder and earlier than most.
Processed and fast foods might be convenient, but they often lack real nutrition. Sugary drinks
The right fuel also fights off inflammation, disease, and sluggishness. That means fruits, greens, and vegetables need to be on your plate daily. Think of food like building blocks: every meal is a brick in the body you’re building. Don’t just eat to get by — eat to level up. Make food your advantage, not your enemy Eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Small, consistent changes can have a big impact on your energy, performance, and long-term health. Here are 4 simple ways to start eating better every day—without giving up flavor or culture:
START YOUR DAY WITH PROTEIN & FIBER
Swap sugary cereals or fast food breakfasts for something that fuels you. Try oatmeal with fruit and nuts, scrambled eggs with veggies, or a protein smoothie with spinach, banana, and peanut butter. This sets your energy and blood sugar up right from the jump.
ADD GREENS TO EVERY MEAL
Whether it’s spinach in your eggs, a side salad with lunch, or sautéed collards or kale at dinner, getting more greens helps your digestion, reduces inflammation, and boosts your vitamins. Don’t overthink it—just add a handful to whatever you're already eating.
CHOOSE WATER OVER SUGARY DRINKS
Soda, juice, and sweet teas are loaded with sugar. Gradually replace them with water, lemon water, or unsweetened tea. Staying hydrated keeps your metabolism strong, supports muscle growth, and helps flush toxins out.
SNACK SMARTER
Instead of chips or candy, keep healthy snacks ready: fruit, mixed nuts, Greek yogurt, or boiled eggs. These give your body nutrients it can use—without the crash or extra calories from junk.
Eating healthy doesn’t mean eating bland. With a few tweaks and some awareness, you can build a diet that fuels your body, and supports the king you’re becoming. Start small, stay consistent, and watch the results show up in every part of your life.

and snacks spike your blood sugar, leading to crashes, weight gain, and insulin resistance. Salty foods raise your blood pressure, straining your heart over time. Fried foods clog your arteries and inflame your body, making it harder to recover, perform, or even think clearly.
The truth is, eating like this every day doesn’t just affect your waistline—it impacts your energy, focus, sex drive, mental health, and long-term survival. Every meal is a choice. Choose fuel, not just flavor. Your body, mind, and future depend on it.
As Black men, we’ve got to reprogram that relationship and choose foods that give us strength, endurance, and long-term health.
Power foods include lean proteins like chicken, salmon, turkey, eggs, and beans. Add complex carbs like brown rice, sweet potatoes, oats, and whole grains for sustained energy. Don’t fear healthy fats — avocados, olive oil, nuts, and seeds support hormones and brain health.
