During the Appointment:
Be honest. If you’re in pain, say it. If you haven’t been sleeping, eating well, or following advice, be real. Your doctor can’t help what they don’t know.
Ask for clarity. Don’t leave confused. If they use medical terms you don’t understand, stop them. Say, “Break that down for me.”
Take notes or bring someone with you. It helps to have a second set of ears or a record of what was said.
HOW TO TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR AND TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH
PUBLISHED: APRIL 3, 2025
This isn’t about being aggressive — it’s about being informed and confident. Your life is on the line. Don’t ever shrink in the face of that.
For too long, Black men have walked into doctors' offices and walked out feeling misunderstood, rushed, or flat-out ignored. That ends now. You’re not just a patient — you’re a partner in your health.
And to get the care you deserve, you have to speak up, ask questions, and hold your doctor accountable.
This isn’t about being aggressive — it’s about being informed and confident. Your life is on the line. Don’t ever shrink in the face of that.
Before the Appointment:
Write down your symptoms: When did they start? How bad are they? What makes them better or worse?
Bring your questions: Don’t wait until you're in the room to think of what to ask. Write it all down.
List any meds or supplements you’re taking, even over-the-counter ones.
If Something Feels Off:
Speak up: If you feel rushed or dismissed, say, “I don’t feel like my concerns are being fully heard.” That changes the tone instantly.
Switch doctors if needed: You don’t owe anyone loyalty when your health is on the line. If you feel disrespected, under-served, or unheard — move on.
Remember This:
You deserve high-quality, respectful, thorough medical care — no exceptions. Going to the doctor doesn’t make you weak. It makes you smart. It makes you powerful. You don’t have to know all the answers — just ask the right questions.
Don’t just show up. Speak up. Ask up. Follow up.
The goal isn’t just to live. It’s to live strong, live long, and live well.
