BROTHER YOU'VE GOT TO STOP KILLING YOURSELF WITH THOSE CIGARETTES
PUBLISHED: APRIL 3, 2019
Let’s be real — smoking isn’t just a habit. For many Black men, it’s stress relief, a coping tool, or something passed down through the culture. Cigarettes, Black & Milds, vapes, even weed — they’re all seen as ways to “relax” or take the edge off.
But here’s the truth: smoking is robbing you of your power. Quietly. Slowly. And in the long run, it’s costing your breath, your body, and your life.
Black men already face higher risks of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure — and smoking multiplies that risk. Tobacco companies target our communities, promote menthols, and feed off our silence. But enough is enough. It’s time to quit. For good. For you. For your future.
WHAT SMOKING IS REALLY DOING TO YOUR BODY
Damaging your lungs: Tar, nicotine, and other chemicals kill off lung cells and reduce your breathing capacity — even if you “feel fine.”
We’re stressed out
We don’t have anyone holding us accountable
But just like hitting the gym or building a business, it’s all about structure and purpose.
SET A QUIT DATE
Pick a real date within the next two weeks. Not "someday" — a real one. Circle it. Commit to it. Get your mind ready.
KNOW YOUR TRIGGERS
What makes you light up? Stress? After meals? With certain people? Recognize the pattern and make a plan to replace it with something healthy — gum, water, walking, deep breathing.
GET SUPPORT
Tell your people. Find a quit coach. Look into free programs or apps made to help Black men quit. You’re not weak for needing help — you’re wise for using it.
USE TOOLS AS NEEDED
There’s no shame in using nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, or medication. These tools help your body transition off nicotine while you build your mental game.
STAY BUSY AND FOCUSED
Work out. Meal prep. Start a side hustle. Read more. Spend time with people who make you feel alive. Replace the habit with something that makes you feel better, not worse.
FINAL WORD: TAKE YOUR LIFE BACK
You’re strong. You’re smart. You’ve survived so much already — don’t let something you can control be the thing that breaks you. Quitting smoking isn’t about being perfect. It’s about refusing to let a cigarette own your lungs, your energy, or your future. You were made for more than addiction. More than cravings. More than short-term escape. Drop the smokes. Keep your power. You got this.

Raising your blood pressure and heart disease risk: Smoking makes your heart work overtime and weakens your arteries.
Killing your stamina: In the gym, in the bedroom, at work — smoking lowers your endurance and energy.

Hooking you deep: Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on Earth — and it keeps you coming back.
